History

The area is linked to the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana, with local folklore suggesting that King Ravana, a legendary ruler of ancient Lanka, hid the abducted Princess Sita in the caves behind the famous Ravana Falls. The name “Ella” is also said to be derived from the Sinhalese word for “waterfall,” a reference to the many cascades that dot the landscape.
During the British colonial era, the rich soil and cool climate of Ella and the surrounding Uva region were recognized as ideal for tea cultivation.
