History
Bentota has a history that dates back to ancient times. According to legend, the town’s name, derived from “Bemtota,” comes from a myth about a demon named Bem who was believed to have ruled the riverbank. The area was also part of an ancient Buddhist settlement. The Galapatha Viharaya, a historic temple in the region, is believed to have been a part of a larger monastic complex that existed in the 12th century.
In the 17th century, the Portuguese built a small fort at the river mouth to mark the southern boundary of their territory. This fort was later converted into a rest house by the British, who used it as a coastal sanatorium. The British also introduced the railway system to the area, primarily to transport coconut produce, which further opened up the region. Today, Bentota is not only a hub for water sports but also a center for traditional Ayurvedic healing and a showcase for the legacy of renowned Sri Lankan architects, such as Geoffrey Bawa and his brother Bevis Bawa, who created stunning gardens and properties in the area.

- Lunuganga Estate: The former country home of Geoffrey Bawa, Lunuganga is a masterpiece of landscape architecture. - Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project: Located a short drive from Bentota, this is a community-based project dedicated to protecting sea turtles. Visitors can learn about the different species of turtles, see rescued turtles, and, if they’re lucky, witness the release of baby turtles into the ocean at night.
- Kande Viharaya Temple: Situated on a hilltop, this historic Buddhist temple in nearby Aluthgama is famous for its towering statue of the seated Buddha, which is one of the tallest in the world. The temple complex also features ancient murals and a sacred Bodhi tree.
